Decorating Fireplace Mantels
A fireplace is often the focal point in your living room. Therefore we must ensure that the fireplace and mantel are decorated correctly. Always use caution when choosing decorating materials. Remember do not place flammable items near the open flame of the fireplace.
There are two approaches to decorating the mantel.
- Symmetrically - Symmetrical arrangements are ofren quite formal and are balanced with featured pairs placed evenly. Often a single focal point item may be placed in the center.
- Asymmetrically - Asymmetrical arrangements contain odd-numbered groupings of items, often in different sizes and styles. A flower arrangement may be placed opposite a grouping of 3 candlesticks, being of the same weighting. The key to asymmetrical decorating is to ensure that the items balance each other visually.
Fireplace Decorating Tips
- Don't ignore the open space under the mantel. Accent items can be hung from the mantel to draw attention to the flame below.
- Complement your mantel decoration with the correct fireplace tools. Be sure your tools are place neatly near the fireplace as to not draw attention away from your mantel.
- Do not over clutter your mantel. You may start decorating and choose numerous items to be placed on the mantel. However together they may not look good. Choose your items carefully.
- Think about the style you wish to portay for your mantel. For example, for a country-style look, try using items of fruit, wheat and natural items.
Sample Decorating Ideas
Here are a few mantel decorating ideas.
- For a understated look with impact, try to large vases with simple fillings, such as branches or a small bunch of large flowers, no more than three.
- Try groupings of candles in varying sizes, pillar candles work well with these arrangements. Add more design to your candles with ribbons.
- For a dramatic impact look, try a large vase-like accent item, to be centred on the mantel. The vase can be the lone item on the mantel, or smaller items can be placed on each end. However, if adding smaller items, be sure to not outweigh the impact of your statement piece.
- Photos are a common mantel decorative accent. If using photographs choose your frames and photos carefully. Be careful to not over-do it. A maximum of three photos is sufficient. With a symmetrical pattern, smaller accents such as slimline candlesticks can be placed in between the photographs.
